Craig MacGillivray produced arguably his best performance of the season for Portsmouth against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday and will now be even more determined to win promotion with Pompey this season.

The goalkeeper made a number of magnificent saves, as Pompey kept their automatic promotion hopes alive with an important point against their League One rivals.

The 26-year-old was outstanding and had to make several decisive contributions to preserve a point.

MacGillivray tipped Lewis Morgan’s overhead kick on to the post after just four minutes and produced another fine save to thwart Charlie Wyke's effort from close range.

The home side pushed for a winner in the second half and the stopper produced another smart save to turn Max Power's long-range drive behind for a corner.

The goalkeeper then somehow turned Will Grigg's effort onto the post, as Sunderland threw everything they had at Pompey, with their automatic promotion hopes also on the line.

MacGillivray has made 52 appearances in all competitions for Portsmouth this season, keeping 16 clean sheets, but this will go down as one of his best performance for the club.

The shot-stopper admitted recently that his performance at the Stadium of Light will rank as the best display of his career - providing Pompey go on to win promotion to the Championship.

Kenny Jackett's men are currently third in the League One table, four points outside the automatic promotion places, but currently have a game in hand on the top two.

Pompey face play-off hopefuls Peterborough at Fratton Park tonight and need a win to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive, before another home game against Accrington on the final day.

After his sensational performance at the weekend, MacGillivray will now be even more determined to win promotion this season, be it via a top-two finish or the play-offs.
