In an interview with Portsmouth's club website, winger Ronan Curtis has revealed that a break from the side has helped him return to form as Portsmouth look to progress further up the league table.

The 23-year-old, who signed from Derry City in 2018, is currently going through his best spell of form since arriving at Fratton Park 18 months ago.

The quick and powerful winger has scored eight goals in 22 games across all competitions this season, six of those goals having come in the past two months since Kenny Jackett made the decision to restore him to the side.

Now quickly becoming one of Portsmouth's key players in their success this season, Curtis has gone from strength to strength on the left-hand side of Portsmouth's attack, cutting inside and having a go at goal.

Curtis said: "It’s always nice to get a few goals and hopefully I can keep the run going to help move us up the table.

"I feel like the little break I had did me the world of good, even though it was frustrating to be left out at the time.

"But I fought hard to get my place in the team back, feel like I’m now bigger and stronger, and can take things in my stride.

"Footballers always want to play and are disappointed when they can’t – the important thing is how you bounce back from that.

"All I really want to do is play as well as I possibly can for my team-mates, the gaffer and obviously the fans."

The winger scored 12 goals in 49 appearances during his debut season in English football, and he is close to already equaling that tally if he carries on his form across the second half of the campaign.

Pompey are 10th in the League One table and are just three points off the play-off places, as they host Ipswich Town tomorrow.

The Verdict

Jackett's man-management of the Republic of Ireland international has helped Curtis back to his best, as he is now playing with a fresher mind and fresher body after being taken away from the spotlight for a bit.

The winger could be key to any success that Portsmouth have this season, and it is important that he is looked after if they want to achieve the ultimate goal of promotion.
