Portsmouth have confirmed the signing of Doncaster's John Marquis, the club has announced.

The striker arrives for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.

The imminent sale of Jamal Lowe to Wigan for £3m will no doubt cover the cost too, and if Marquis is able to maintain the form he has shown in recent years then he will repay his transfer fee.

He has been one of the most prolific strikers in the EFL since joining Doncaster three years ago - In that period he has scored 60 league goals, helping to take his side from League Two to the League One play-offs.

Last season, Jamal Lowe finished Portsmouth's top goalscorer with 16 but next to him was Ronan Curtis and Brett Pitman on 11.

The Verdict

This is a brilliant signing and its magnitude cannot be underplayed.

Sunderland had been linked with Marquis earlier this summer and there was a sense that the club he signs for would get a big lift towards promotion.

Pompey struggled to score goals at times last season with Lowe their top scorer on 16. As he is likely to leave it was integral they brought in a natural goalscorer like Marquis, and he should help to take them to the next level.

If the team plays to his strengths he should continue to score goals, giving the team what it missed out on last season and therefore getting the extra few points they need for automatic promotion this time around.
