Portsmouth are lining up a loan move for Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan, and are close to securing their third target in the January transfer window.

Portsmouth.co.uk are reporting that Kenny Jackett is targeting the 24-year-old attacking midfielder in a bid to boost his side's promotion hopes.

Having joined Barnsley from Luton Town in 2017, McGeehan became a regular last season as he scored six goals in 39 League One appearance to help the Yorkshire side achieve promotion to the second tier.

This season however, he has scored two goals in 14 appearances across all competitions as he has recently fallen out of favour since Gerhard Struber was appointed manager at Oakwell in November.

24-year-old McGeehan has had an unhappy visit to Fratton Park before, breaking his leg in 2017 while playing for Luton and his reaction to the crowd's jeers seeing him receive a booking from the referee.

Pompey manager Jackett has already been quick in getting some of his transfer business done quickly, having brought left-back Steve Seddon in on loan from Birmingham City and adding striker Reeco Hackett-Fairchild to the ranks from Bromley.

The Verdict

The potential signing of McGeehan at Portsmouth could be a massive statement of intent to their promotion hopes, as McGeehan would bring quality and creativity to the final third at Fratton Park.

He would be able to work well in the formation that Jackett uses and the style of play suits the way that he would want to play, with his signing being a welcome one by Portsmouth fans if it was to get over the line.
