Portsmouth midfielder Michael Jacobs has admitted to The News that he has held talks with Ipswich Town this summer over a potential move to Portman Road.

The 29-year-old has long been linked with a move to Ipswich during the current transfer window, with the Town manager, Paul Cook, having previously been granted permission to speak to his former Wigan Athletic player.

However there has been little in the way of developments over a deal being completed since, with Jacobs having recently made his comeback from injury against Luton Town for Pompey.

Now Jacobs has provided some clarity on his current situation as he stated the following on Ipswich's interest:

"To be fair, because I didn't play a lot last year it was obviously surprising (Ipswich's interest).

"There were talks at the time, but that happens in football."

Before he made his stance clear on how he sees himself at Portsmouth:

"I want to stay here and produce a performance that I know I can throughout the season, should I be wanted."

Jacobs originally arrived at Fratton Park back in the summer of last year from Wigan and has since gone on to play 22 times for the South Coast side across all competitions.

The winger is now into the final year of his contract at Fratton Park and could still leave this summer.

The Verdict

Jacobs is still a player that has a lot to offer at Pompey and I think they would be wise to keep him around in case Ronan Curtis does indeed get his move away from Fratton Park.

He has a tough time with the club after experiencing his fair share of injury problems and I think he just wants to kick on and show everyone what he can do moving into the new season.

The Ipswich link is always going to be there because of Cook and I think it may be a little late in the window for him to be thinking about a move to Portman Road now.

I can see him staying put for the time being and I am sure that Danny Cowley will be looking to utilise him regularly if he can prove his fitness during this pre-season schedule.
