Jamal Lowe is set to complete his move from Portsmouth to Wigan Athletic by the end of this week, The Portsmouth News have reported.

Both The Latics and their Championship rivals Millwall have been linked with a move for Lowe in the summer transfer window, and it now looks as though it is Paul Cook's side who have won the race for the winger's signature.

Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett has claimed that the club has yet to receive an acceptable bid for Lowe, although it is thought that Wigan are close to agreeing a deal for the winger that will match Pompey's reported £3million valuation of the 25-year-old.

Lowe was a late withdrawal from Pompey's 2-1 friendly win over non-league Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday, having initially been named on the teamsheet for the match in what Jackett later called an error.

Speaking about Lowe's potential departure, the Pompey boss was somewhat non-committal, as he told the Portsmouth News: ‘Is his departure inevitable? I don’t know to be honest with you, it may take some time, three parties to have to agree and, if that's the case, I can only stress we haven’t accepted the bid."

Since joining Portsmouth from non-league Hampton and Richmond in January 2017, Lowe has made 119 appearances in all competitions for Pompey, scoring 29 goals and providing 16 assists in that time.

There are currently just 12 months remaining of Lowe's contract at Fratton Park, leaving this as perhaps their final opportunity to receive a fee for the winger.

The Verdict

This is a big boost for Wigan heading into next season.

Following the departure of Nick Powell, The Latics were arguably lacking a creative attacking outlet heading into the new campaign, and Lowe's record suggests he is someone who can fill that role at the DW Stadium.

That Wigan are paying such a fee, while also beating out other Championship rivals to the signing of Lowe, should also be a huge sign of encouragement for the clubs fans about what they can become capable of moving forward.

For Portsmouth meanwhile, this will be a big loss. Lowe was outstanding for Kenny Jackett's side last season, and just as Wigan will benefit from it, they will miss Lowe's attacking instincts as they look to make their own push back towards the Championship next season.
