Portsmouth striker Brett Pitman has emerged as Swindon Town's number one transfer target this January, after Eoin Doyle was recalled by Bradford City

With Swindon now actively searching for a replacement for their top goalscorer, the Portsmouth News report that 31-year-old Pitman has emerged as the prime candidate to fill in that gap at the County Ground for Richie Wellens' side.

It has been a tough season at Pompey for Pitman, who has managed to make just four starts for the club in League One, falling behind John Marquis and Ellis Harrison in the pecking order.

Pitman was also left out of Kenny Jackett's 19-man squad for Tuesday night's Leasing.com trophy win against Walsall.

It is also reportedly the case that Pitman is one of Pompey's highest earners, with a chance now to free up space on the club's wage bill.

The 31-year-old is also out of contract at the end of the season. However, Swindon's interest suggests that Pompey may be able to cash in on the forward this January.

Ellis Harrison, John Marquis and Oli Hawkins can all play as a sole striker, meaning Jackett may not have to bring a replacement for Pitman if the forward leaves Fratton Park.

The 31-year-old has scored 42 goals in 98 appearances for Pompey.

The Verdict

This an opportunity for Portsmouth to cash in on one of their highest earners, and the move may make sense for all parties involved.

Pitman has fallen out of favour at Fratton Park, despite being a key player for the club in recent seasons.

As he is turning 32 at the end of this month, Pitman may feel this move may be a good choice at the latter end of his football career.
