Portsmouth midfielder Gareth Evans is set to make his 200th appearance for Portsmouth this weekend as they line up against Mansfield Town in League One.

Evans signed for the club in the summer of 2015 and played on the right side in Paul Cook's preferred 4-2-3-1 setup before being moved to right-back for the 2016/2017 season after overcoming injury, helping Portsmouth to achieve promotion from League Two and make the step up to the third tier.

In 2017-2018, Evans took up the vice-captaincy with Portsmouth and played a vital role before being converted into a central midfielder for the 2018-2019 season, also donning the captain's armband due to Brett Pitman's inconsistent form. So far on the south coast, Evans has made 199 appearances and netted 34 goals from his different positions on the pitch.

Evans started out his senior career with Macclesfield Town in 2007 and across two seasons, scored 20 goals in 89 appearances. Evans then moved on to Bradford City for two seasons and scored 14 goals in 85 games in Yorkshire, before going on to score nine goals in 49 for Rotherham United along the same period of time. Evans then scored 12 goals in 106 appearances for Fleetwood Town across three seasons before securing his move to Portsmouth.

The Verdict:

Evans is deserving of his place within the Portsmouth squad and always gives 100% to the cause.

Evans fights tooth and nail for every ball, is tenacious in the way that he plays and has adjusted well to a more central role at Fratton Park.

Evans is one of Portsmouth's underappreciated stars, and his displays in the middle of the park have been consistently good while under Kenny Jackett.
