League One promotion hopefuls Portsmouth are looking at making a move for Nottingham Forest winger Ryan Yates.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Pompey are keen on signing the young winger on a deal in January, with Yates currently struggling to get anywhere near the first team picture at the City Ground under manager Aitor Karanka.

Portsmouth are flying high in the League One table and are looking at boosting their ranks in January, with Yates identified as a key man they would be interested in signing.

It looks like the club are looking at more than a loan move too, with the report claiming that Pompey could even be willing to stump up a fee in the region of £500,000 for the 21-year-old.

Yates has enjoyed spells away from the Reds already and had varying degrees of success in spells with both Notts County and Scunthorpe in recent seasons.

The young winger, who is adept at either side of the field, had been hoping to break into the Forest XI this season on a regular basis, but saw a massive summer recruitment drive by the club put an end to those chances.

The Verdict

This would be a shrewd move by Pompey in all honesty.

Yates is a top young talent and would immediately boost the squad at Fratton Park.

While his time at Forest has not been one riddled with first team opportunites, the ability is there for all to see, and he would surely be a key addition for a club like Portsmouth.
