Portsmouth are keeping tabs on Notts County forward Kyle Wootton ahead of a potential swoop in the January transfer window, according to a report by The News.

Pompey manager Danny Cowley recently suggested that the club could be in the market to sign a new striker.

Whilst John Marquis has managed to provide seven direct goal contributions for Portsmouth in the third-tier this season, the likes of Ellis Harrison and George Hirst have struggled to deliver the goods on a consistent basis at this level.

Hirst has only scored once for Pompey in the third-tier during the current campaign despite making 13 appearances for the club in this division.

Meanwhile, Harrison has yet to find the back of the net at this level this season and has been limited to just one league start.

As per a report by The News, Cowley watched Wootton play in the Magpies' FA Cup clash with Rochdale earlier this month.

Although the forward failed to score in this fixture, it is understood that Portsmouth are still considering the possibility of signing him in January.

During the 17 league games that he has played for Notts County this season, Wootton has netted seven goals.

The forward has also managed to find the back of the net on two occasions in the FA Cup.

The Verdict

Whilst Pompey may need to bolster their attacking options in the upcoming window in order to improve their chances of securing a top-six finish this season, it could be argued that they ought to steer clear of taking a risk on Wootton.

Despite showing glimpses of his talent in the National League in recent years, there is no guarantee that he will be able to deliver the goods on a consistent basis in the third-tier.

During his career to date, Wootton has only managed to score 11 goals in League One in the 61 appearances that he has made at this level.

Instead of swooping for the 25-year-old, Cowley may find it more beneficial to sign an individual who has recently set the third-tier alight with his attacking displays.
