Christian Burgess has revealed that he would like to sign a new contract at Portsmouth, The News Portsmouth is reporting.

Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess is settled at the club and wants to commit his long-term future to Fratton Park.

Christian Burgess had an obscure route into football.

He was spotted whilst playing for the University of Birmingham and was snapped up by Middlesbrough.

After a loan spell at Hartlepool (during which time he achieved First Class Honours in his History degree), the towering 6ft 5in defender moved to Peterborough United.

He spent a year with Posh before his move to League Two side Portsmouth and he has been there ever since.

During his time at Pompey, Burgess has established himself as a fans' favourite for his passionate and consistent displays at the back, his aerial threat from corners and his work in the community.

However, the 25-year-old only has one year left on his current deal with Pompey and this might start alerting other clubs to a cut-price deal.

But Burgess wants to stay and sign a new contract because he is happy on the south coast.

The Londoner has played close to 100 games alreaThe Verdy in his Portsmouth career and wants to remain at the club.

Christian Burgess said:

‘With the takeover going through it’s an exciting time to be part of the club.

‘Fingers crossed I can be here for a few more years.

‘It’s good to be able to settle in one place and have somewhere where you feel comfortable.

"It’s different from what I’ve had before but it feels good."

When asked whether he would like to pen a new deal, the popular centre half added:

"For sure.

"Hopefully it can get sorted at some point"

The Verdict

In order to grow as a club, Portsmouth need to ensure they have their best players tied down to long term contracts.

Christian Burgess has been an excellent servant to the club both on and off the pitch and deserves to be rewarded with a new deal.

The 25-year-old seems genuinely content at Pompey and they need to ward off interest from competitors by handing him a new and improved deal.
