Portsmouth owner Michael Eisner has said he is disappointed by his side's poor start to the League One season, but urged supporters to back the team during a difficult period.

The south-coast side are currently sitting 20th in the League One club following a concerning start to the season, which has seen them win just one league match since the start of the campaign.

The latest blow saw Kenny Jackett's side suffer a 1-0 defeat away to high-flying Wycombe Wanderers over the weekend, with Pompey having now gone five league matches without a win at this early stage of the season.

They are now preparing to renew their fierce rivalry with Southampton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, and Eisner has encouraged Pompey fans to get behind their side ahead of the clash with the Premier League side.

Speaking on his Twitter account, he said: "Of course I am aware of our poor start. Of course I am disappointed by it. But support is what I will give and hope all fans, and I am one, will also give. Very tough match tomorrow. Let’s back the team."

Eisner is now entering his third full season at the club's helm following his takeover of the club in August 2017.

The Verdict

Jackett is likely to come under serious pressure from Portsmouth fans if he is unable to turn around their poor start any time soon, but I'm sure many of the club's supporters will agree with Eisner's comments ahead of the Southampton match.

Pompey have not faced their bitter rivals for some time now, and a disgruntled fan base is not what the club's players will need if they are to secure an unlikely result against Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

I don't think the result on Tuesday night will have much of an impact on Jackett's future at the club, but failure to beat Bolton Wanderers at home on the weekend could lead to serious calls for his sacking.

Pompey need to now be challenging at the top of the table following their play-off campaign last term, and they currently don't look like achieving anything near that so far this term.
