Portsmouth go into tonight's FA Cup third round draw knowing it could have been very different after a stoppage time winner consigned sixth-tier Altrincham to a 2-1 defeat at Fratton Park last Saturday.

The National League North side ran their League One opponents close, as The Robins equalised from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute through Josh Hancock, after Pompey took the lead through a Ben Close strike half an hour earlier.

It looked like it was heading for a replay back at Moss Lane, before Brett Pitman sent a headed effort at the back post past Altrincham goalkeeper Tony Thompson to spare the blushes for the Hampshire side.

Although Portsmouth will be in the hat for the third round draw, it will be a concern for Pompey fans that their side were not able to dominate against two non-league sides - as Kenny Jackett's team were also unconvincing in their first round win against Harrogate Town on November 11th.

The cup ties against Harrogate and Altrincham respectively saw both sides have their fair share of possession, as well as a number of attempts at Portsmouth's goal.

Altrincham had 47% of the ball on Saturday, with ten attempts on goal, with Harrogate having 54% possession and nine attempts in the previous round.

It is also damning that Pompey fielded a strong lineup against the side from Greater Manchester on Saturday, which will not give fans confidence in the slightest that their side struggled against non-league opposition despite having their best players on the pitch.

Pompey's two FA Cup performances thus far will be an added worry for the Fratton Park faithful, who believed their side had turned the corner following a good recent run of results,  as Portsmouth have won five times in succession in all competitions, and are unbeaten in eight.

A number of fans will lay the blame at the manager for the performance, but it is likely that the players may have gone into the game with a hint of complacency.

Nevertheless, a factor that could be behind the performance was the absence of Tom Naylor and Sean Raggett, who have been consistent performers for Pompey this season, and were a big factor in the side keeping clean sheets when they were in the team.

Can you name Portsmouth's club player of the year from the past 15 seasons?

It will be good news for the Pompey fans that the pair are back in first-team training, and  they won't need to see Anton Walkes and Oli Hawkins play out of position for much longer.

Last Saturday's game will be a wake up call for Kenny Jackett, as there is definitely room for improvement.
