Portsmouth’s young defender Jack Whatmough has been ruled out injured for six months, confirms Sky Sports.

The 18-year-old suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in Pompey’s 2-2 draw with Cheltenham last week at Fratton Park.

This is the teenager’s break through season and although he was expected to miss the rest of the season, he is unlikely to be fit for start of the next campaign.

He was taken off in stoppage time with Andy Awford having already used three substitutes.

Credit must go to the youngster because after he picked up the injury he was keen to get back out on the field as the Blues were chasing the three points.

But it is a huge blow for the defender who has made 24 appearances so far this season.

Awford is also without fellow defender Paul Robinson, who has had surgery on his cheekbone, meaning he is out for the rest of the season but he will be available for the beginning of the next campaign.

This has given the Pompey boss a selection headache as he now has to rethink his defensive options.
