Portsmouth midfielder Dion Donohue could be set for Wembley agony after he limped out of a reserves match this week, as reported by the Shields Gazette.

The 25-year-old was playing in a reserves game against the Royal Navy, but suffered a relapse and is now set to undergo a scan to reveal the extent of his injury.

He's endured a frustrating season, making just 14 appearance thanks to a series on niggly injuries.

He was only included in the game to build up strength as he hunts a return, but appears to have suffered a severe setback with his groin.

He appeared as a late sub in the 2-0 victory against Scunthorpe at the weekend, but has managed just five starts in the league with a further five outings from the bench.

He's also featured in two matches on their run to Wembley, scoring against Crawley in the group stages.

Portsmouth face Sunderland a week on Sunday in the EFL Trophy final, a game which promises to bring the biggest crowd the competition has ever seen.

90,000 fans are expected to pack into the national stadium to watch the teams currently placed third and fourth in the table do battle for the season's first piece of silverware.

The Verdict

Portsmouth are struggling with injuries at the moment, with Ronan Curtis also out.

They won't have been relying on Donohue coming into the side, he's been absent for much of the season, but it'll be a big blow for the player.

He will have hoped to play some part in their big day, but that now looks unlikely.
