Derby striker David Nugent has emerged as a transfer target for League One side Portsmouth, according to a latest report from the Mirror's live transfer blog, (January 10th, 12:47pm).

Nugent has fallen down the pecking order in Frank Lampard's side, largely due to the impressive form shown by summer signing, Jack Marriott.

The 33-year-old has made just 11 starts this season, and his future at Derby seems like it is hanging in the balance after this latest news.

Kenny Jackett's Portsmouth side are high flying in League One and are the league-leaders ahead of both Luton Town and Sunderland.

They have been the team to beat this season and they are showing no signs of a slump in form anytime soon, with many supporters confident of returning to the Championship after a lengthy spell away.

This wouldn't be Nugent's first spell with Portsmouth if he joined, as he previously represented Pompey in 2007.

It was a successful spell with Portsmouth as well, as the striker netted 20 goals in 93 appearances for the South Coast side across a four-year-spell when Pompey were at a much higher level.

The Verdict

It would be a smart bit of business by Kenny Jackett's side.

They are in need of some extra attacking firepower this season, and Nugent would certainly provide them with that going forward.

He has unfinished business with Pompey after previously playing for the club earlier in his career and could be the missing piece in the promotion jigsaw for the league-leaders.
