Portsmouth have announced their third signing of the January transfer window, as Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan joins the club on loan until the end of the 2019/20 season.

The 24-year-old was part of the Barnsley side that secured automatic promotion from League One last season, making 44 appearances in total and scoring six goals.

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett said he is pleased with the club securing McGeehan's signature.

“We’re delighted to sign Cameron. He’s still young, but has a lot of experience," he told the club website.

QUIZ: How much can you remember from Portsmouth's 2012/13 season?

He can play as either a holding midfielder or in a central role, which will give Ben Close and Tom Naylor competition in the middle of the park.

The 24-year-old has found game time increasingly hard to come by for the Tykes in recent weeks under Gerhard Struber.

McGeehan last featured for the South Yorkshire club in their 5-3 win against QPR, as a second half substitute. He has made just two appearances since Struber's appointment.

In total, the midfielder has made fourteen appearances in all competitions this season for Barnsley, scoring twice.

The move represents the third signing this window for Pompey, after the additions of Steve Seddon and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild.

The Verdict

Portsmouth have made a statement of intent with this addition, as it shows that the club want to take their promotion ambitions seriously during the second half of the season.

McGeehan was one of Barnsley's star performers last term, and has proven himself at League One level, which can only be good news for Kenny Jackett.
