Jamal Lowe has finally completed his move away from Portsmouth, with the winger joining Wigan Athletic on a permanent deal.
The 25-year-old enjoyed an outstanding previous season in League One, scoring 15 goals as Kenny Jackett’s side managed to reach the play-offs but they ultimately fell short in the semi-final against Sunderland.
Nevertheless, Lowe’s performances caught the eye and it was always going to be hard for the south coast side to keep hold of their star man.
And, there was a lot of interest in the player, with Pompey initially standing firm after offers from Championship sides came in.
But it seemed inevitable that a move would happen and Portsmouth announced his exit on their official site this evening.
The move to the Latics will see Lowe link up with former boss Paul Cook – the man who took him from non-league Hampton & Richmond to Fratton Park a few years ago.
His departure may force Jackett back into the market before the deadline next week as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion.
Most fans will just be glad this transfer saga is over as it has been in the pipeline for weeks and it has dominated much of the talk in Pompey’s pre-season.
From a football perspective, he is a significant loss as Lowe was brilliant for the side last season and his form was key to their top six finish.
But, they do have quality elsewhere in the squad and Jackett now has funds to go into the market and it’s about attracting the right players.
As for Lowe, he will be relishing the chance to play in the Championship as he continues his remarkable rise through the leagues.
