Portsmouth have announced the signing of Craig MacGillivray on the club's official website.

MacGillivray joins on a free transfer and will officially become a Portsmouth player on July 1st.

The 25-year-old joins from Shrewsbury Town after spending one year at New Meadow.

During his stint with the Shrews, MacGillivray managed just 14 appearances, largely due to the good performances of Dean Henderson, who starred on loan from Manchester United.

The 6ft 2in stopper is now choosing to move on from Shrewsbury and try to earn a starting spot elsewhere.

At Pompey, he will compete with Luke McGee - who is considered to be first-choice - and youngster Alex Bass.

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett confirmed that MacGillivray will push McGee for the starting spot between the sticks.

He said: “He strengthens our goalkeeping department and will provide good competition for Luke McGee. They can drive each other on."

MacGillivray started his career at non-league side Stalybridge Celtic before moving to his hometown club Harrogate Town.

He finally earned his Football League chance in 2014 with Walsall and he played 19 games in all competitions for the Saddlers before his switch to Shrewsbury last summer.

The Verdict

It is hard to judge MacGillivray given his lack of experience at this level.

During his time in League One, he has largely been considered as a solid second choice stopper, which is ideally what Portsmouth want.

MacGillivray will have to be very impressive to displace McGee between the sticks and I expect the former Tottenham youngster to start the season in goal.
