Portsmouth are reportedly close to securing their fifth signing of the summer with Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff set for a loan move to Fratton Park, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.
The 20-year-old impressed whilst on loan at Blackpool last season, scoring nine goals.
But Kenny Jackett appears to have beaten the Tangerines to Longstaff’s signature this season, with the Newcastle youth graduate ready to sign a season-long loan deal.
Pompey will be keen to improve on their squad this season as they look to make a push for promotion.
Last season saw them finish just outside the play-offs, but the fans are hopeful that a strong transfer window can see them break the top six and maybe go even further.
Jackett is still to spend any money on transfers this summer with Lee Brown, Craig MacGillivary, Louis Dennis and Tom Naylor all arriving on free transfers.
This is another shrewd signing by Kenny Jackett as he silently puts together a team that will be challenging right at the top of the division.
Alongside fellow new boy Tom Naylor, Jackett has clearly identified his midfield as a problem area and the Pompey faithful should be happy to see action being taken.
Longstaff is a real physical presence in midfield, capable of carrying the ball forward well and linking the defence and attack.
He also has a rocket of a shot on him. He scored from all of 25-yards against Northampton Town last season in a 3-0 win.
