Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has revealed that there has been considerable interest this summer for goalkeeper Luke McGee.

The 23-year-old has reportedly, as per the News, attracted suitors from abroad and is free to leave Fratton Park after being overtaken in the pecking order by Craig MacGillvray and Alex Bass last season.

Limited to just five appearances during the previous campaign, McGee was left out of Pompey's squad by Jackett for the club's 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday and is unlikely to feature in the League Cup against Birmingham City tomorrow.

Speaking about McGee's future to the News, the Portsmouth boss admitted: "There has been interest in Luke but I don't think there's the right move for him so far.

"Luke is a good goalkeeper and he will be looking for a No1 spot.

"The right No1 spot hasn't quite come up yet and we understand that.

"We'll have to see how things go between now and the end of the transfer window.

"We have three keepers in MacGillvray, Bass and McGee, which is quite good.

"We will 100-per-cent talk to him [when he has found the right club].

"People want to move on to play and we understand that."

The Verdict

When you consider that McGee's current deal with Pompey is set to expire next year (via Transfermarkt), moving him on now could prove to be the correct decision for Jackett to make as it will give the club a chance to secure a transfer fee for the keeper.

Although the money in question may end up being nominal, it could free up some space in Portsmouth's wage budget which could be used to add a new addition to the squad who is able to have a bigger impact on their fortunes over the next nine months in League One.

Whereas the arrival of John Marquis from Doncaster Rovers last week has bolstered Jackett's attacking options, it could argued that he may need to bring in another forward to counter-act Jamal Lowe's departure to Wigan Athletic if Pompey are to launch a sustained push for promotion this season.
