Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett is delighted with the progress of his young left wing-back Brandon Haunstrup.

The 20-year-old has started and played the full 90 minutes in the last four league games, assisting Pompey’s equaliser against Wigan Athletic in the process.

When asked about his work in progress, Jackett had this to say to Portsmouth News:

“He’s had a little run and been put into the team because of the injury to Tareiq, but has responded well, has a good character and works very, very hard”

‘He will continue to improve.

‘Brandon is quite a level lad as well, he’s a good lad, he’s hard working, he has a good mentality to be a footballer, which you do need. You need a tough mentality.

Despite good performances at such a young age, Haunstrup is yet to be on the winning side for Portsmouth this season with two draws and two losses in the league and one loss in this Carabao Cup against Cardiff.

The Verdict

Although his hands are essentially tied when it comes to giving the youngster a chance, it is nice to see Jackett putting his faith in the younger players within the Pompey ranks.

At his age, all he needs is consistent first team football and he will naturally get better and more comfortable playing at such a level.

Even when he is fit again, Tareiq Holmes-Dennis is only on loan at Portsmouth so a continuing display of good performances could see Haunstrup break into the first team, sooner rather than later.
