Portsmouth fans have been given an update on one of their injury stricken players this season, Oli Hawkins, as he continues his recovery from a foot injury.

The striker turned defender suffered the injury in September's south coast derby defeat to Southampton at Fratton Park, and has not featured for Kenny Jackett's side since. However, that is not the first injury Hawkins has suffered this term.

Prior to Portsmouth's league match against Burton Albion on 17 September where Hawkins took his place on the bench, the Ealing-born attacker was also sidelined with injury, and had a difficult pre-season with back issues.

Portsmouth's manager has provided an update on Hawkins in his pre-match press conference as Pompey take on a struggling Southend United side at Fratton Park tomorrow evening.

BBC South Journalist Andrew Moon has reported that Hawkins is still a week or so away from first-team contention and will not be risked for the Southend game tomorrow, but may be available for Monday's FA Cup tie against Harrogate Town.

With the additions of Ellis Harrison and John Marquis over the summer, Hawkins has found himself at centre-half for Pompey when he has featured this season, with Jackett keen on converting the striker.

The Verdict

Hawkins' versatility is an advantage, and having him back will give Jackett an extra striking and defensive option, which will be a positive for the squad. Hawkins will be hoping his poor luck with injuries this season is at an end.

Christian Burgess and Sean Raggett have been Pompey's centre-back partnership of choice so far this season, and Hawkins will have some work to do to force himself into the defence.
