Portsmouth recorded only their second away win of the season yesterday as they overcame Gillingham 1-0 at the Priestfield Stadium.

Matthew Kennedy was once again the bright spark for Pompey and struck the winner immediately into the second half.

Overall, it was a fairly comfortable afternoon for Kenny Jackett's men, who deserved the win and the manager was delighted to collect all three points.

It was a battling performance and I felt that the key against Gillingham was that we had to get it wide at the right time, get into two v one situations,” he told the club's media.

The goal came after a cross from the right was headed against the post by Curtis Main before Kennedy slammed home.

Gillingham did have a goal correctly ruled out in the second half, but the visitors restricted them to very little throughout, which pleased Jackett.

We've needed a solid base to go off and to keep clean sheets and a consistent back four, but we haven't necessarily had that but despite the changes I felt that we defended very well and physically stood up today.”

The Verdict

It's been a mixed start to the season for Portsmouth, but yesterday was a much more assured display, even if things are not at all well with Gillingham.

Kenny Jackett is rightly full of praise for his defence who were solid, whilst Matthew Kennedy and Jamal Lowe were constant threats down the flanks.

Pompey will now look to add consistency to their game, having not won back-to-back league games all season.
