Portsmouth and Charlton are among several clubs eyeing a move for former Tottenham man Giancarlo Gallifuoco, according to HITC Sport.

Gallifuoco signed for Italian third-tier side, Rieti in the summer and was made club captain shortly after arriving at the Italian side.

However, Rieti are suffering financial problems as they look to win promotion to Serie B and they could now lose a number of their top performers, including their talisman, Gallifuoco.

The move wouldn't be Gallifuoco's first in England, as he has previously represented Tottenham and Swansea at youth level, but failed to breakthrough to the first-team in a disappointing spell in England.

Gallifuoco has also represented Torquay United and Dover Athletic before making the move over to Italy, but he could be tempted by a return to England with Portsmouth and Charlton reportedly registering their interest in the Australian under 23's international.

The move would certainly be an interesting one, as many Pompey and Addicks fans would be keen to see if he can finally prove himself at a high level in England after previously struggling in the early stages of his career.

The Verdict:

It would be a strange move at first, but if Gallifuoco could prove himself in England, then he could be one of the bargains of the season.

With Rieti struggling financially, the League 1 clubs could be tempted to submit lower offers to tempt the Italian club into selling their talisman on the cheap.

Portsmouth and Charlton are both challenging for promotion to the Championship this season and the Australian would add some much-needed depth to their squad ahead of a busy festive period.

He can play in defence or in midfield so he could be a handy player to have in either of the League 1 teams' squad.

I think that he could prove to be an excellent bit of business for either side if he was to make the move as he has a point to prove after previously struggling to make a name for himself in earlier spells in England.
