Port Vale ended their pre-season schedule on a high with a 3-2 win over Premier League side West Bromwich Albion.

The Midlands outfit fielded a side of youth and experience with the likes of Victor Anichebe, Craig Gardner and Jonas Olsson all starting for West Brom.

England's World Cup goalkeeper Ben Foster was amongst the substitutes for the away side.

Kemar Roofe put the Baggies in the lead after just five minutes, but Vale were quick to respond when striker Ben Williamson tapped in the equaliser at the back post 12 minutes later after some good work by Ryan Lloyd.

The League One side took a 2-1 lead into the break when a Michael O’Connor free-kick found the head of Tom Pope who’s looping header got the better of Boaz Myhill.

O’Connor and Pope both came through the youth ranks at Crewe Alexandra and they have stayed friends off the pitch.

That connection was apparent as the pair linked up for the second goal for the hosts.

In front of a crowd of 2,145, defender Bradley Garmston fired in the equaliser for Alan Irvine’s men after the break.

Both sides made plenty of changes after the interval with Port Vale fans getting one final look at the majority of the squad ahead of the season opener with Walsall on Saturday.

The game looked like it was going to be a draw, even though O’Connor had come close when his chip rattled the cross bar.

Gardner was unlucky when his blistering effort struck the post for the visitors late on in the match.

In the 83rd minute, Baggies defender Craig Dawson got in a mix up with Myhill and his backwards header nestled into the bottom of the net to give Vale the win on the night.

Micky Adams' side have won seven of their ten friendlies this summer with defeats to Southport and Bolton, as well as a draw with Tiverton Town.

The other wins have come against Newcastle Town, Alsager Town, Norton United Alfreton Town, Plymouth Parkway and Bodmin Town.
