Speaking to Charlton Athletic’s official Twitter feed, Lee Bowyer has been reflecting on his time with Leeds United, describing the club’s supporters as unbelievable.

Bowyer was a Leeds player between 1996 and 2003, making over 250 appearances for the Whites and scoring 55 goals during that time.

The 40-year-old was part of Leeds’ squad that competed for the Premier League title and also made waves in Europe under David O’Leary.

Financial difficulties at Elland Road led to Bowyer’s exit, but he reflects on his time at the club fondly, particularly the bond between his teammates and the club’s supporters.

Bowyer said: “They respected us, and we respected them. We gave everything on the pitch every week and they couldn’t take that away from us.”

Bowyer was an influential figure for Leeds during the 2000/01 season, scoring 15 goals across all competitions, including six in the Champions League, as the Whites made it all the way to the semi-finals.

The box-to-box midfielder scored goals against the likes of AC Milan and Barcelona that season, and admits that those European nights brought a special bond with the club’s supporters, he continued: “When we went and played in Europe all over the place, after a game they’d get held behind, we’d get changed, come out, we’d have sing songs.

“The fans were unreal, I have to say, they were unbelievable.”

Bowyer is currently working at Charlton, the club where he started his career, as Karl Robinson’s assistant manager.

The Verdict

Bowyer was a phenomenal player during his time at Elland Road, and was part of a Leeds side that should have perhaps won a trophy under David O’Leary.

Leeds played an exciting brand of football, and Bowyer’s goals from midfield were a trademark from that time.

Those European memories will stay with Leeds’ supporters forever, and Bowyer will remain a popular figure at Elland Road due to his contribution during that time.
