Oldham Athletic have appointed caretaker manager Pete Wild as head coach until the end of the season, causing a mixed reaction from supporters.

The 34-year-old takes over following the resignation of Paul Scholes after just 31 days in charge at Boundary Park.

Wild took caretaker charge of the club earlier in the season after Frankie Bunn was sacked in December and recorded four wins, three defeats and one draw from his eight matches in charge, including a memorable victory over Fulham in the FA Cup.

The news was confirmed on the League Two club's official Twitter feed earlier today.

Oldham are currently 15th in the League Two table, ten points off the play-off places and 15 points above the relegation zone.

The Latics are without a win in their last six league matches and fans of the club will be desperate for Wild to improve that form now he is head coach.

Wild's first game in his new position will be at home to Grimbsy Town a week tomorrow, with the club not in action this weekend.

It is fair to say that the announcement caused a mixed reaction from Oldham fans on social media, with some supporters happy with the appointment and others expressing their disappointment.
