New Brentford signing Pontus Jansson has revealed the timeline of his departure from Elland Road.

The central defender joined the Bees on Monday, for a fee that could reportedly rise to £5.5 million.

He made 120 appearances for Leeds across three seasons but, according to Football Insider, Marcelo Bielsa believes the club will be better off without him moving forward.

Speaking to Brentfordfc.com, the 28-year-old revealed the timeline of his move from Leeds to Brentford.

He said: "It has been hectic. A lot of talks, rumours, and travel. I talked to Thomas (Frank) for the first time four or five days ago and it was a good talk.

"After that, it went quite quickly and now I am here, and really, really happy to be here.

"I said to my agent my ambition is to stay in England and if there wasn't anything in the Premier League, I said to him to start looking in the Championship.

"I said directly to him 'please check with Brentford' because Brentford is one of the best teams, maybe not the biggest but one of the best when they have a good day.

"He said he knew the sporting director Rasmus (Ankersen) so we called him and a couple of hours later he texted me to say Thomas wanted to talk to me and after that, it went quite quickly.

"I was just happy to talk to them and happy to be here now."

The Swedish international added that he is relishing the new role offered to him with the West London club.

He said: "I am one of the oldest players in the team, it is a young team, so I have high expectations from the club to take care of the young kids. I will do it and I will work hard to make them better every day.

"It is a new part for me, I'm not used to being the oldest one in the team but I will take it and learn from it, and hopefully I will be a better teammate, a better player, and a better person."

Verdict

Brentford fans should be thanking the connection between Jansson's agent and their sporting director because the arrival of the Swede is an excellent bit of business.

Bielsa seems to see no place for Jansson in his plans for the season ahead but his influence over the past three years is undeniable.

The 28-year-old was half of one of the strongest centre-back partnerships in the Championship alongside Liam Cooper last season, with the duo finishing as two of the three highest rated defenders in the league, according to WhoScored.

If Jansson can build a similar partnership at Brentford, potentially with fellow new arrival Ethan Pinnock, it will provide Frank's side with an excellent defensive foundation.
