Brentford centre-back, Pontus Jansson, has stated that the club can aim for the top two this season.

After an inconsistent start to the season, the Bees are now flying and slowly but surely pushing higher up the Championship table.

On Tuesday night, Thomas Frank's side came away from Swansea with a 3-0 victory, a result that started to make many sit up and take a look at the Bees.

The attacking quality that they possess is brilliant at times, and with Said Benrahma getting back to his best, Brentford are only going to keep scoring goals.

In the summer, they strengthened their defence and brought in highly-rated Leeds defender, Jansson, and he feels that they must have big aims for the current campaign.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jansson said: "There's no meaning of aiming for top six, when you can aim for top two. And if you aim for top two, there's a bigger chance that you are going to be top six.

"There's no meaning for us to talk about it to other people, to the fans, to the media. We can be quiet, work and take it game-by-game and then hopefully when it comes to April/May we're going to be in the top six.

"Performances have been good and results could be better but this club, how they work with underlying numbers, expected goals and things, they are so calm because if you look at those numbers, we're going to be in a higher position."

The Verdict

Jansson has always been an ambitious character, and someone who plays with his heart on his sleeve. That is a very admirable trait and it's good to see him setting these targets not just for himself but also for his team-mates, in order to get that mentality throughout the squad.

Brentford often play good football and in an attractive manner, but sometimes fail to get the results that they deserve. That is slowly changing, and with Jansson in defence, they now seem to have a nastier streak than what they had last season.

The Championship is wide open this year, and I wouldn't rule Brentford out of being in the mix for the play-offs come May.
