New Sunderland CEO Jim Rodwell has claimed that the North East club owe it to their fans, players and the game to ensure the 2019/20 campaign is completed on the pitch, which has drawn a negative reaction from many Black Cats fans.
EFL fixtures have been suspended for nearly two months and it has been reported that the League One and League Two seasons are set to be curtailed.
According to The Athletic, clubs will be given a vote on how to finish the season, with a weighted points-per-game system the favourite proposal.
Can you remember which Sunderland manager signed each of these 15 players? Have a go now!
A host of League One sides appear driven to ensure that doesn’t happen as six clubs have joined together to highlight their determination to complete the current campaign on the pitch.
Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony took to Twitter yesterday to post a statement that made that stance clear on behalf of the Posh, Fleetwood Town, Oxford United, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, and Sunderland.
Via the North East club’s official Twitter account, Rodwell made a statement of his own to address the situation.
'Together, we know we can overcome those challenges and when it is safe to do so, end the campaign the right way.'

Rodwell was appointed last month and doesn’t appear to have won over the supporters yet.
His claim has drawn a negative reaction from many fans of the club, who have questioned the stance and the new CEO.

Didn’t he say this at Boston and ran them into administration?

I'm starting to think this football club is allergic to doing what's morally right https://t.co/g9Vn3YsGIu

Can we not https://t.co/3w54M2wYmM

Dont trust anyone in charge at our club to want to do this for right reasons. Dont trust them to bring any level of success to make it worthwhile. We’ll look a bigger embarrassment for begging to let us resume the season for us to end 7th or 8th. Hope the league take it away https://t.co/rJuNeJPT4A

No. It won't be decided by us – or you. It will be decided by the EFL. It seems pointless to publicly state otherwise. https://t.co/gTGcGGEJyJ
