Whilst the Carabao Cup may be seen as an inconvenience for most of the sides competing at the top of the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed at least one of his stars will start against Barnsley.

The Argentine manager responded to the media when asked if Dele Alli would start by saying: “Yes, he is going to play.

The former MK Dons man is currently serving a European suspension that will keep him out of the next two Champions League games which has seemingly freed him up to play tonight.

As well as that, the attacking midfielder has suffered a mixed start to the season and faces a FIFA investigation for a gesture he claims was made to team-mate Kyle Walker.

With all that in mind, a home game against Barnsley seems a good way to regain his form.

His Spurs manager was in no doubt of his talents, adding: I think he is still very young. His potential is massive. He did very well last season and it's not easy for a young player to keep this level and show this level in every game.

However, Barnsley are sure to put up a fight when they travel to Wembley. The hosts poor record there is well known and in many ways it's a free hit for the Yorkshire club, with all the pressure on Spurs.

Another confirmed starter is new signing Juan Foyth, who will make his debut for the North Londoners.

The Verdict

Even though it reduces their chances of winning, Barnsley fans and players should be delighted that Dele Alli will start.

It's a glamour tie for all connected to the club and they will want to come up against the best, of which Alli is.

All the pressure will be on Spurs to avoid more talk of a Wembley jinx.
