Norwich City goalkeeper Remi Matthews is a loan target for Plymouth Argyle, The Plymouth Herald has reported.

The Pilgrims are in need of a replacement stopper after Harry Burgoyne suffered a broken ankle during a recent training session.

It leaves the League One side with 30-year-old Kyle Letheren as the club’s only fit senior goalkeeper, with academy product Michael Cooper the only other alternative.

With the Canaries bringing in Tim Krul this week, they now have three keepers to fight for the number one shirt with Michael McGovern the third along with Matthews.

Matthews is the youngest of the three and could find competition for a place in the Norwich squad too intense and instead look for a short-term move away.

The 24-year-old made 27 appearances during a loan spell that culminated in Promotion from League Two last season, keeping ten clean sheets.

Norwich’s goalkeeper has yet to make an appearance for the club during his four season’s at Carrow Road, having been loaned out every year since his arrival.

The Verdict

The move would make sense for both clubs.

Matthews isn’t going to play at Norwich with Tim Krul now arriving and looking to be the clear favourite for the number one jersey.

Plymouth need a goalkeeper, and the 24-year-old was on loan there and was apart of their promotion-winning squad.

If the stopper isn’t going to make a Championship appearance, then why not let him test his chances in the division above what he was playing in the season before, and with the same team.

The continuity of the loan club would help him develop further, and one day he might get to make his Norwich City debut.
