Sky Bet League Two side Plymouth Argyle are interested in signing Bury midfielder Jay O'Shea, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The 30-year-old was influential for the Shakers as they won automatic promotion to League One last season, and was nominated for the League Two Player of the Season award along with James Norwood and Danny Mayor.

But the Irish playmaker, who scored 16 goals and produced five assists last term, is currently facing an uncertain future at Gigg Lane, with former Bury boss Ryan Lowe looking to complete a deal to bring him down to Home Park this summer.

Lowe left Bury at the end of the 2018/19 campaign, amid tough financial problems behind-the-scenes which ultimately marred their promotion from League Two at the first time of asking last term.

The 40-year-old looks set to raid his former club, with Nicky Maynard and Danny Mayor also believed to be on the Devon club's wishlist this summer, as Argyle look to win promotion to League One at the first time of asking themselves next term.

O'Shea is out of contract at the end of the month, so Lowe will be looking to complete the signing of a midfielder on a free transfer this summer.

The Verdict

Signing a player of O'Shea's quality and calibre would be a massive statement of intent by Argyle, and it would show just how serious they are about getting promoted next season.

O'Shea, along with Maynard and Mayor, all flourished for Lowe last season, thriving in the manager's high-tempo, attacking style of play, and you would obviously expect him to stick to that philosophy next season.

After losing a creative player in Graham Carey to CSKA Sofia, this would be an unreal replacement.
