Charlton Athletic will have to make do without the services of central midfielder Conor Gallagher for the rest of the season after the 19-year-old was recalled by parent club Chelsea.

The midfielder is being lined up for another loan move, this time to the upper echelons of the Championship, with Steve Cooper's Swansea City looking the most likely destination for the teenager.

Lee Bowyer will now be assessing the options that his side has in midfield, and will be deciding just how best to replace Gallagher for the next few months.

Here, we give our opinion on what Charlton should do to try and replace Gallagher...

Firstly, how would you assess Gallagher's loan spell at Charlton?

"Gallagher has had a productive loan spell at Charlton, and he will have learnt a lot from it.

"He will have learnt about what it really takes to play men's football in a competitive league, and he stood up to the test with some excellent performances.

"Scoring six goals in 26 appearances is a good record for a youngster who was experiencing his first loan within men's football."

Did Chelsea make the right choice in recalling Gallagher?

"I can see why Chelsea chose to recall the 19-year-old.

"The club as a whole and Frank Lampard was clearly pleased with how he was progressing at Charlton, but they must be feeling that a few months at a side in the top half of the division will do wonders for him as well.

"They have seen what Gallagher is capable of in the midfield of a side that was languishing in the bottom reaches of the table, and now want to see his ability and attitude while playing for a side in the top half."

What sort of midfielder do the Addicks need to replace Gallagher?

"Ideally, they will be wanting that like-for-like replacement for the midfielder.

"They will be after that player that can step up and play a box-to-box role, winning the ball in midfield before driving the team forward and trying to find the forwards in behind.

"If Charlton can replace Gallagher with a midfielder who is capable of scoring goals as well, then great, but in their situation, I think a midfielder who can tackle first and attack later is their best bet of replacing Gallagher for now."

Is there anyone within the Charlton squad that can step up and take Gallagher's role on?

"Charlton's midfield have been ravaged by injury over the past few months, and Lee Bowyer will be hoping that someone from his own squad can come in and fill the hole left by Gallagher.

"They had Jonny Williams and Jake Forster-Caskey return from injury at the weekend, and one of them could step up to replace Gallagher in the midfield alongside Darren Pratley.

"Charlton have Ben Dempsey available to them as well, a promising youngster from the youth system, but Bowyer may consider it unfair to play him week in and week out at 20 years of age having been on loan at Dulwich Hamlet earlier on in the season."

Could Charlton try and recruit from elsewhere?

"There would be plenty of options available for Charlton externally if they was to go down that route to replace Gallagher.

"Bowyer may ask Chelsea for another promising Blues youngster that can come in and fill the gap for the second half of the season, with the likes of Billy Gilmour available and possibly looking for regular football."

Is Gallagher going to be a hard one to replace?

"Gallagher had a major impact upon Charlton with his goal contributions and overall play during the first half of the season.

"Of course Charlton will find it difficult to find a replacement that can play the way that he does, but Bowyer will try and find the right player whether it be internally or externally.

"The Addicks will need to make sure that they look at all possible options however, and decide which players would suit the way that Bowyer likes his team to play and come into the midfielder's spot."
