Middlesbrough are said to hold the option to extend Lewis Wing's current contract by a further year if they choose to do so, as per a recent report by Teesside Live.

This update comes not long after the midfielder completed a season long loan move to Sky Bet League One side Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

The move to Hillsborough is due to take Wing to the end of his current deal with Boro, which raises a lot of questions marks over his long term future at the Riverside Stadium.

However the club does possess the option to extend his contract by an extra 12 months and it appears likely that the player could return to Rockliffe next summer.

Wing has now made three loan moves since joining the North East side, after previously taking in spells with the likes of Yeovil Town and more recently, Rotherham United last season.

The midfielder did feature in pre-season for Boro prior to his departure, however his game time was due to be limited by the arrival of Matt Crooks from Rotherham.

The Verdict

I have to admit that I was pretty shocked when Boro sanctioned this loan move for Wing as he had certainly impressed many in pre-season for Neil Warnock's men.

He is a talented player who is now into his prime years as a professional and I think Middlesbrough would be silly if they turned down the opportunity to not extend his deal by another year.

Clearly the hope is that he gets a full season of football under his belt before returning to the Riverside, but I still feel he could have offered something in the Championship this term.

All in all this move works well for the player and the two clubs involved, and I do believe that Boro will take up that option next summer.
