Players left shocked by Garcia resignation – Billy McKinlay

New Watford manager Billy McKinlay has admitted that the club’s players were left shocked following the resignation of Oscar Garcia on Monday.

Garcia was appointed as successor to Beppe Sannino on 2 September, but quit after 27 days following a health scare which forced a lengthy stay in hospital.

A club statement confirmed that the former Brighton manager’s health is of “no further cause for concern,” but that he needed extensive rest and could not continue in his role.

McKinlay was immediately promoted to the role of manager, and today spoke of the difficulty the news has caused the club’s players.

Speaking to the Watford Observer following Tuesday’s match against Brentford, the former Scotland international said: “I couldn’t fault the players’ spirit, attitude and application – particularly after Monday. It was a difficult day for the players because they were getting to know Oscar and were looking forward to working with him.

“It was as big a shock to them as anybody else so all-in-all, looking at it balanced, it was a terrific result.

“Monday was a really strange day because things happened so quickly and the rest is history.

“It was a hectic day yesterday but I spoke to the players and said the most important thing is your performance and focus.

“Unfortunately these things happen in football, in many different guises, and the most important thing is focussing and concentrating on the game and trying to cut away the side-show.

“I think they did that really well and I am pleased.”

The Hornets won the game thanks to a goal from Odion Ighalo and a superb strike from Matej Vydra,
