Grimsby Town were unable to perform any cup heroics, as they went down to what in the end turned out be a heavy 7-1 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

However, Grimsby can take some postives from moments of their performance against Chelsea, especially the goal socred by striker Matt Green, who fired home superb effort after James Hanson flicked on James McKeown's goal kick, to send over 5,000 visiting Marniners supporters wild.

That goal did breifly offer some hope, as it helped reduce Chelsea's lead to a goal after early goals from Ross Barkley and Michy Batshuayi gave the hosts a two-goal lead, but Frank Lampard's side managed to register a third just before the break with Pedro converting a penalty.

Michael Jolley's side attempted to find a foothold in the second period, but were eventually clinically brushed aside by Chelsea, who with goals from Kurt Zouma, Reece James, Batshuayi and Callum Hudson-Odoi made it a resounding 7-1 scoreline by the final whistle.

Despite suffering what in the end was a thrashing, Grimsby can take heart from the fact that they never gave in and continued to play even though Chelsea were ruthlessly punishing any slight lapses in their defence.

Here, we take a look at how Grimsby supporters reacted to the defeat, with many praising their players efforts despite the scoreline on social media...
