Swansea City have announced that Rhys Williams has officially been recalled from his loan deal at the club.

Williams joined the club last Summer in a deal that was set to keep him in Wales for the entire campaign.

However, a lack of game time has seen his parent club Liverpool decide to bring him back to Merseyside. 

The 20-year old defender will now go back to Liverpool, where they will decide what to do next with the player’s future. 

Liverpool are reportedly looking for a buyer for Nat Phillips, which could open up a space for Williams in the squad. 

Phillips has appeared twice for the Reds this season, so there could be game time available for Williams at the club if he does replace him in the pecking order.

Williams only appeared in five Championship games for Swansea this season, starting four. He failed to break into the side that is 17th in the table. 

Swansea have failed to capitalise on their play-off final defeat last season, with Russell Martin’s side slipping down the table. His side are winless in their last four games, with a home game against Preston North End next up on January 22. 

The Verdict

This is the right move for Liverpool to make with Williams at this stage of his career. The defender simply hasn’t played enough at Swansea and is better off back at his parent club.

At Liverpool he gets to train alongside experienced world class players and can play the odd game, which is far more valuable than what he was getting with Swansea. 

Finding another loan move is also an option available to Liverpool. But given their defensive issues last season, they may not want to part ways with another cover player in the event that another injury crisis hits the team.

At 20-years old, there is still plenty of time for Williams to develop into a first team player, and Liverpool have shown this season that there is a willingness to throw young players into the team when needed.
