Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United are set to announce the signing of Motherwell winger Stuart McKinstry, according to reports from Football Insider.

The Whites have been heavily linked with the youngster's signature for months now, but finally look set to win the race for the winger, beating off competition from Premier League outfit Southampton.

The attacker has hugely impressed in the youth ranks at Fir Park, but after failing to make a senior appearances for the SPFL club, he now looks set to join the promotion-chasing Whites.

It is believed that the 16-year old has passed a medical and has also agreed personal terms with the club, and looks set to complete a move to Elland Road in a deal worth around £400,000 plus add-ons.

The initial plan is for the winger to linkup with Carlos Corberan's talented under-23 side, signing an initial scholarship deal with the club which will then become a three-year deal on a professional contract when he turns 17 in September.

The Yorkshire club have plenty of talented youngsters coming through the ranks at Thorp Arch, with the likes of Aapo Halme, Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton all making first-team appearances for Marcelo Bielsa's men this season.

After the midweek results, Leeds are back up to 2nd in the Championship table, with just five games left to play this term.

The Verdict

It's clear to see why Leeds are so keen to sign McKinstry, as he looks to be a magnificent talent on paper and looks like a typical Bielsa player.

Leeds have so many talented youngsters at the club, especially in their attacking areas, and McKinstry would definitely add competition for places amongst the youth set-up.

Leeds have been chasing him for a while, and it looks like they have finally got their man, although I would wait until the club officially announces the signing, as look what happened with Dan James in January.
