Bailey Peacock-Farrell has delivered his thoughts on Jamal Blackman’s arrival at Elland Road, as the battle to become Leeds United’s first choice begins.

Confirmation came yesterday that Blackman had agreed a season-long loan deal with the Whites, with the 24-year-old expected to compete with Peacock-Farrell for a starting berth in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

Discussing Blackman’s arrival with LUTV, 21-year-old Peacock-Farrell said:

“All Championship clubs need at least two first choice goalkeepers now, that’s how it is, and I think me and Jamal, he’s come in here to play games, but I’m here as well and I want to be playing games so the competition is going to be there.”

Peacock-Farrell finished last season as Leeds’ No.1, having taken the gloves from Felix Wiedwald, after the German’s poor run of form.

Since then, Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan have both departed Elland Road, with Peacock-Farrell and Blackman now the two goalkeepers set to compete for a starting berth in the Championship.

Blackman is highly-rated by his parent-club, Chelsea, and last season made a strong impact in the Championship whilst on-loan with Sheffield United.

The goalkeeper made 33 appearances for the Blades, helping Chris Wilder’s side finish 10th on their return to the second-tier.

The Verdict

It’s going to be a fierce battle for the No.1 jersey at Elland Road, with Blackman and Peacock-Farrell two good options.

Blackman will arrive looking to play games, and Peacock-Farrell seems determined to challenge him for a starting berth.

The battle can only be good for the development of both players next season.
