Coventry City defender Jack Grimmer is considering a return to Scotland this summer, following in the footsteps of former teammate Marc McNulty.

Speaking to the Sunday Post, via Coventry Live, Grimmer revealed that he's already spoken to a couple of clubs, having seen the success McNulty has had since moving to Hibernian on loan in January.

It's been a tough season for the former Fulham full back, after being a key figure last season he's found himself on the periphery as the Sky Blues have mounted a serious play off assault.

Meanwhile, McNulty has six goals from five starts since joining Hibs and was recently called up to the full Scotland squad. That has prompted Aberdeen-born Grimmer to consider his future, not just at Coventry but in the English game as a whole.

“Last season was a dream but the difference between that and this season has been like night and day. It’s something that I’ve had to deal with and I’ve tried to just keep my head down and work hard, but I can’t wait for next season, so I can get a fresh start and hit the ground running.”

“I’ve had talks with a few clubs in Scotland, actually. When you see the pathway that Sparky (Marc McNulty) has taken, going to Hibs and getting international recognition, it looks attractive."

The 25-year-old left Aberdeen for Fulham in 2012 and added that there's a little bit of him perhaps yearning for a return home.

“It crossed my mind the other day when I was thinking about moving back to Scotland that I’ve been in England for seven years now, which is crazy. It would be nice to walk into a shop and hear a Scottish accent again, that’s for sure!”

Grimmer has been capped up to Scotland Under 21 level and has made just eight starts so far this season.

The Verdict

It's surprised me that he has struggled for matches. Last season he was excellent for the Sky Blues, but bringing Dujon Sterling in on loan hasn't helped him one bit.

He's certainly League One quality, but a move somewhere like Aberdeen or Kilmarnock would bring regular football and maybe, just maybe a full international cap.
