Sheffield Wednesday were dealt a big blow when it was confirmed that key man Fernando Forestieri required surgery on a knee injury that would keep him out for months.

Despite his absence, the Owls have coped well without the attacker, and the 1-1 draw at Cardiff last time out meant they still haven't lost since the opening day.

There was some good news from Forestieri, who took to Twitter to reveal he has completed the required surgery and was coming out of hospital on the first step of his recovery.

A mentioned, it's expected to be a long process that could mean Wednesday have to do without the influential Argentinian until the start of the new year.

However, boss Carlos Carvalhal seems to be finding the right solutions to playing without the player who has been key throughout his reign.

With a massive Steel City derby to come on Sunday at Hillsborough, Wednesday know they can leapfrog their bitter rivals and potentially make the top six.

In the long-term, if Carvalhal can keep his side in and around those places whilst Forestieri is unavailable, it will be great work.

When the ex-Watford man returns he is sure to add something extra to the Owls attack.

The Verdict

Forestieri is a big loss to Wednesday even if he was in and out of the team before his setback.

He undoubtedly adds a creative spark and edge that few in the division can rival when he's at his best.

Carvalhal will know that his return around January could see Wednesday kick on for the second half of the season.
