Portsmouth began their defence of the EFL Trophy last night with a 1-0 victory over League Two side Crawley Town at Fratton Park with one man in particular producing an impressive display.

Named as a substitute for the clash, Brett Pitman was brought on in the second-half by Kenny Jackett.

With the clash heading towards a stalemate, the 31-year-old fired a superb effort past Crawley goalkeeper Michael Luyambula.

Although the Red Devils pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, Pompey held on to secure all three points.

Currently top of their group, Portsmouth will be aiming to move a step closer to securing their place in the next round of the competition when they face Norwich City Under-21s on Saturday.

For Pitman, yesterday's game allowed him to showcase his talent to Jackett after what has been a frustrating start to the 2019/20 campaign.

Despite scoring 13 goals in all competitions for Pompey last season, the forward has been limited to substitute appearances this year due to the summer arrivals of John Marquis and Ellis Harrison.

After witnessing Pitman open his account for the season, plenty of Portsmouth fans took to Twitter to react in a positive manner.
