There's speculation doing the rounds this morning that Gary Cahill, the Chelsea and England defender, could be a target for Championship clubs this winter.

He's struggling to break into the Chelsea team and is currently thought to be pondering a request to move. That has set some clubs on red alert, including Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday.

Jos Luhukay wasn't able to bring new players to the club in the summer and losing Jack Hunt and Glenn Loovens left their defence looking threadbare.

They've started the season well, but he'll be hoping that a winter recruitment drive will help nudge his side further up the table, maybe even to a surprise top six finish.

FLW looks at what the Wednesday defence might look like should they sign Gary Cahill.

Tom Lees plays as the right-sided centre back of a three and there would be no reason to suspect that would change.

He's been a consistent performer for the Owls but would benefit from Cahill's experience and knowledge.

Daniel Pudil would still be on the left side of the three, although Luhukay might consider changing him too, if he could.

Michael Hector is another who has played at the back for Wednesday, he's versatile and could offer value elsewhere.

Cahill would walk into the Owls back three and would surely be the central figure. Any loss of pace would be covered left and right, leaving him to organise.

His experience would be invaluable, especially to the two young wing backs. He could be a vital figure in the latter part of the season.

21-year old Baker is one of two young players to have settled in quickly at Wednesday and the silver lining to the Owls' horrible summer.

He could only benefit from Cahill's presence and maybe cement a place in the Wednesday side for the rest of the season.

Penney has been incredibly solid in the problem position of left-back and there's no reason he won't keep his place if Cahill signs.

After seeing the likes of Adam Reach and George Boyd struggle there, it must be comforting to see a talented young man emerge from the shadows to stake a claim.
