Championship outfit Fulham are set to face a serious battle to land Diego Rolan this summer, as Premier League side Newcastle United have joined the race according to French newspaper Sud Ouest.
The 24-year-old striker currently plays his football at French outfit Bordeaux, where he has scored 38 goals and laid on 13 assists in 149 games for the club since moving there back in 2013.
And last season saw the Uruguay international continue to fire in front of goal with nine goals in just 29 Ligue 1 matches for Bordeaux, in turn helping them to a sixth place finish in the French top-flight, as well as attracting interest in his own services.
Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham have reportedly been interested in Rolan for a while now, yet recent reports suggest that Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle are also keeping tabs on the 24-year-old ahead of a possible move this summer.
The Magpies will be playing Premier League football next season after clinching the Championship title last time round, and the lure of top-flight action may be enough to tempt Rolan into a move to the North East.
Jokanovic’s Cottagers weren’t far away from the top tier last term, losing to Reading in the play-off semi-finals, yet their status as a second tier side could seriously hinder them in this quest, especially as Newcastle will likely be able to offer higher wages than the London-based club.
Nonetheless, it has been reported that Fulham have held talks with the player so perhaps lead the chase, although Newcastle’s interest may alter that in the coming days and weeks.
