Derby County manager Phillip Cocu hopes Jack Marriott can start a good run of form in front of goal after he scored in the Rams’ 2-1 win against Barnsley.
Marriott has struggled to become a regular under Cocu, with the striker having only managed to register one goal in his opening 19 Championship appearances.
However, the 25-year-old was able to double his league tally for the season by getting on the end of Wayne Rooney’s free kick just before the break.
The striker was presented with a number of promising chances against Barnsley, and was guilty of wasting several before he opened the scoring.

Speaking to the media following Derby’s 2-1 win against Barnsley, Cocu suggested that Marriott should use his goal against Barnsley as a springboard to kick on.
“It was an important moment for Jack and I was happy he scored his goal. He kept getting himself in positions, and let’s hope that’s the goal that keeps him going.”

Marriott has endured a really frustrating start to the season, with the striker at times starved of service and also struggling with his fitness during the opening half of the campaign, but against Barnsley there were sings of the striker getting back towards the sort of form he showed for the Rams last term.
He will have been frustrated to have missed a couple of presentable chances against Barnsley, but at least he was starting to receive the sort of service that he has been lacking so far this campaign.
Cocu will be hopeful that Marriott can now start to get back to his best in front of goal – and if he does he will be a major asset to this Rams side.
