Phillip Cocu outlines his ambition for Derby County

Derby County manager Phillip Cocu has outlined his philosophy at the club, revealing that he wants to play possession-based football.

The 48-year-old took charge of the Rams last month, signing a four-year deal at Pride Park.

The PSV Eindhoven and Fenerbahce boss spoke to the media for the first time since becoming Derby manager at a press conference this afternoon, where he offered some insight into his philosophy at the club.

Cocu admitted that he likes his teams to play possession-based football, with an emphasis on short passing and lots of movement.

The Derby boss also admitted that he is expecting his side to challenge for the top six in the Championship this season, after the Rams just missed on promotion under Frank Lampard last term.

“I’m very happy to be here. This is the right step in my career, and the right fit,” he said.

“We want to develop players and continue the philosophy that we have. Of course, we want to be competitive, so we will always try to be in the top-six.”

“My philosophy is to not only have possession, but to create. I like short passing and a lot of movement.”

Derby finished sixth in the Championship last season and lost to Aston Villa in the play-off final at Wembley.

The Rams face Huddersfield Town in their opening game of the season and will be hoping to start the campaign with three points.

The Verdict

I think this is an encouraging sign for Derby fans.

Derby have got some very talented attacking players that should suit the way that Cocu wants to play and the experienced coach should be able to get the best out of the likes of Tom Lawrence and Kieran Dowell.

Promotion will be the target for Derby next season but it’s also important that the team play attractive football that the fans can really get behind.

Cocu seems to want to play in the right way and I’m sure Derby took that into consideration when offering the job in the first place.

It will be interesting to see where Derby finish in the Championship under Cocu this season and he could turn out to be a very good replacement for Lampard.
