Derby County are interested in signing striker Andre Ayew from Championship rivals Swansea City, Football Ghana have claimed.

According to the latest reports, newly appointed Derby manager Philip Cocu is keen on a reunion with the Ghanaian, having previously signed him on a season-long loan for Fenerbahce last summer.

Although Cocu was sacked after just four months in charge at Fenerbahce, Ayew impressed during his time with the Turkish side, who are reportedly keen to bring him back to the club.

It now seems however that Fenerbahce could face competition from their former manager, who is thought to have told his new employers to look to sign the player before the close of the summer transfer window on Thursday.

According to Wales Online, Swansea themselves are keen to offload Ayew before the close of the window, having already allowed Andre's twin Jordan Ayew to make his loan move to Crystal Palace permanent earlier this summer.

Having first joined Swansea from Marseille in the summer of 2015, Andre Ayew then moved to West Ham the following summer after scoring 12 goals in 34 league appearances in his debut campaign at the Liberty Stadium, before returning to Wales two years later.

Ayew's second spell at the Liberty Stadium has been less successful however. The attacker failed to score in 12 appearances as Swansea were relegated from the Premier League during the 2017/18 season, before spending last season on loan at Fenerbahce.

There are still two years remaining on Ayew's current contract with Swansea, which would tie him to the club until the summer of 2021.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

Derby could arguably benefit from a new attacking option before the close of the window, although you have to wonder whether Ayew would be the best option for that role.

The Ghanaian has never really settled since his first departure from Swansea, and it is hard to know whether he would be able to make the sort of impact Derby are likely to require if they are to push for promotion again this season.

That being said, Phillip Cocu has more than enough experience in football to know what he is talking about, so you imagine it could be well worth listening to their new manager as they look to make their final moves in the transfer window.
