Phillip Cocu discusses Derby County duo’s abilities ahead of Nott’m Forest meeting

Derby County will travel to the City Ground on Saturday to face Nottingham Forest in the East Midlands Derby and manager Phillip Cocu has spoken about a key duo in his side ahead of the fixture.

Cocu’s Derby side will travel to Nottingham on Saturday looking to kick start their season after an inconsistent start which has seen them drop to 15th in the Championship standings.

A victory last time out against Middlesbrough gives Derby the chance to secure back-to-back wins for the first time this season, but rivals Forest currently sit in 5th place and have been in good form.

Having made some changes to his midfield last week against Boro, Cocu opted the play with Jack Marriott and Chris Martin as a front two.

Whilst neither scored in that win; Cocu has touched on impressive performances from both, whilst also saying that he would like to see more from the duo.

Speaking to RamsTV, the Dutch coach explained: “They are two players with different qualities, but they match up good in the team.

“They benefit from the qualities they both have.”

Away from preparations for the game with Forest, Derby have been met with the news that former defender Richard Keogh plans to appeal against his sacking from the club.

Keogh was involved in a car accident with team-mates Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence, who have both since pleaded guilty to drink driving and accepted a fine.

News of an official appeal is yet to come from Keogh’s representatives, but the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) have said they will back the former Rams captain.

The Verdict

Anything good that is happening on the field for Derby at the moment is a delight to the club’s fans and to manager Phillip Cocu and along with Tom Lawrence – Marriott and Martin could provide a good attacking trio.

Both Marriott and Martin will both be buoyed by the praise from Cocu, especially ahead of such a big game and what better way to repay their manager than scoring or helping their side to all three points on Saturday afternoon.
